Spain launches 68-seat disaster prevention panel
Spain’s new 68-seat disaster prevention panel brings government bodies, scientists and social organisations together to work on reducing risks. The Spanish Interior Ministry’s Secretariat-General for Civil Protection and Emergencies established the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction on Wednesday, 7 October. It gives these groups a permanent forum for identifying priorities, sharing knowledge and recommending action.
The panel includes representatives from 22 government ministries, all 17 autonomous communities, Ceuta and Melilla, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, and 26 civil society organisations. Its work covers Spain as a whole; no Mallorca-specific measures have been announced.
Virginia Barcones, Spain’s secretary-general for civil protection and emergencies, says increasingly complex and connected threats, worsened by the climate emergency, call for stronger prevention and cooperation. The panel’s next steps include an operating handbook, a plan to publicise its work and a standing committee. Members have also begun setting priorities for a future national disaster risk reduction strategy and want to encourage regional and local platforms.
