Mallorca doctor gap sends Felanitx patients to Palma

Families in Felanitx, Mallorca, face trips to Palma or other towns to see relatives sent away for recovery care, local Socialists say. The doctor’s post at the Bartomeu Quetglas care home’s recovery unit is vacant following a retirement. On Friday 16 October, the PSIB called on Mallorca Island Council president Llorenç Galmés and the Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) to fill it.

The unit has cared for people from Migjorn and Llevant since 2016. It provides temporary, specialised support after a hospital stay. Amanda Fernández, the PSIB’s leader on Mallorca, said the retirement was foreseeable and the replacement should have been planned in advance.

María Gracia González, the party’s spokesperson in Felanitx, said relatives had been sent to Palma or other towns because the unit could not provide adequate care without a doctor. The journeys make it harder for families to balance their other responsibilities, she said.

The PSIB says the vacancy points to wider problems in services run by IMAS, including unfilled posts and underused facilities. Its immediate demand is a doctor for the Felanitx unit.
