Palma DomusVi care staff warn of fresh protests

Several dozen DomusVi Palma care home workers gathered outside the residence next to Hospital Palmaplanas in Palma on Friday, protesting over staff shortages and excessive workloads. The action, held from 10.45 to 11.30, was their second demonstration this August. They say they have received no response from the company to their demands.

The staff want enough permanent workers in every department. In a manifesto read during the protest, they said the problems had not been solved and warned that workers cannot be expected to keep taking on extra tasks while ending shifts physically and emotionally exhausted.

The works council, made up of CCOO, UGT and FOL, says shortages make daily work harder for the technical and care teams and affect both staff conditions and the care given to residents. It says sickness absences are not being properly covered, leaving some employees with physical injuries.

DomusVi Palma says it is willing to talk and has taken steps to ensure sufficient staffing during the summer. Workers’ representatives reject that account and want effective action on workload, fair recognition for all staff, genuine negotiations and written commitments with clear deadlines.

The works council meets the home’s management on Monday. If no solution emerges, workers expect to return outside DomusVi Palma for another demonstration on Friday, 4 September.
