Mallorca drought alert: Manacor cuts lawn watering

Manacor on Mallorca is restricting drinking water for municipal grass areas and cutting beach street-cleaning water to the bare minimum. The measures were announced on 26 August 2026 after the Manacor-Felanitx water-demand area moved from pre-alert to drought alert. The town hall says it wants to reduce use before water reserves, especially underground aquifers, worsen further.

The council is also asking water-supply companies to watch consumption more closely and spot potentially excessive or abusive use. Where they find it, they must contact the users involved and explain how to cut consumption.

Pools, gardens and businesses under scrutiny

Homes with pools are advised to keep them covered when they are not in use, reducing water lost through evaporation. Garden owners are being urged to gradually replace grass with plants better suited to the Mediterranean climate.

Shops and industrial businesses should check their systems for leaks and repair any they find. Blocks of flats are also being encouraged to install individual water meters, which show each home’s actual use and allow it to be charged correctly under planned progressive tariffs.

Manacor has already removed 85% of public grass

The council says it has removed about 85% of grass from public gardens and spaces in recent years, replacing it with native species. It also points to progressive tariffs based on consumption, approved by the municipal council to tackle excessive use during drought alerts or emergencies.

Manacor plans to coordinate with municipalities sharing the same water resources and with the Balearic Government, monitoring conditions and adjusting its measures as the situation changes.
