€2 tourist tax plan: PSIB targets Mallorca rents

PSIB is taking a proposed €2 increase in the high-season tourist tax and a curb on rent rises to the Balearic Parliament. Rosario Sánchez, the party’s candidate for president of the Balearic Government in the 2027 regional election, set out the plans in Palma on Tuesday, 1 September. They are aimed at tourist saturation, housing and climate change across Mallorca and the rest of the Balearics.

The first bill would add two euros to the Sustainable Tourism Tax, commonly called the eco-tax, in high season. Sánchez said it mirrors an increase outlined by Balearic President Marga Prohens in 2025, though she conceded it was not the tax rise PSIB would ideally seek.

A second proposal would seek to have the Balearics declared a stressed residential market, a designation intended to limit rent increases. Sánchez said the islands have Spain’s highest rents but no areas with that status, which she said has helped restrain rises elsewhere.

Sánchez also pressed the PP-led government to act on climate change, pointing to a 33ºC sea-water reading at the buoy off sa Dragonera this summer. She accused the government of failing to tackle rising food-shopping costs and of offering excuses on tourism policy.

The PSIB parliamentary event began with a minute’s silence for former tourism minister Celestí Alomar, who died on Monday, and teachers Tomeu Barceló and Joana Maria Socias.
