Eivissa council meeting scrapped as Vox blasts August break
Eivissa Town Hall scrapped its regular August council meeting, and Vox says opposition groups were left unable to scrutinise the ruling team normally for two months. The party called the decision “unacceptable” on 1 September. Its councillor Luis Astorri said the break came as the city faces heavy tourist pressure.
Astorri pointed to Eivissa’s population of more than 50,000 and said August is among the busiest months for municipal services. Problems faced by local people do not disappear during the holiday period, he said.
The council’s timetable calls for a regular meeting on the last Thursday of every month, according to Vox. Mayor Rafael Triguero can suspend the August sitting because of the holiday period, but only if this does not harm the handling of municipal business.
Vox said the suspension was an option rather than a requirement, and criticised Triguero for not first agreeing an alternative with opposition groups. The only meeting held in August was an extraordinary sitting to award the city’s Gold Medal.
That session had a fixed purpose and could not replace a regular meeting, Vox argued. Regular sittings allow council groups to put forward their proposals and challenge the municipal government’s work; Astorri said smaller groups were particularly affected.
