Palma, Mallorca, faces a Saturday protest over electric carriages: animal welfare group Progreso en Verde says the People’s Party (PP) is holding up the switch from horse-drawn vehicles. In a statement on 15 October 2026, the group said carriage drivers could not order electric vehicles without a guarantee that they would be allowed to use them. The march is due to start at 18.00, running from Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina to Plaça de la Reina in Palma.

Group president Guillermo Amengual pointed to Alcúdia, Muro and Sant Llorenç, all on Mallorca, where he said the switch had succeeded. The protesters want electric carriages introduced immediately and a dignified retirement for the horses after their working lives.

Progreso en Verde also says it has not received the full report from the horses’ latest veterinary inspection, despite asking for it in writing. Amengual said the group had written to prosecutors over the matter.

Palma City Council said on Wednesday that it was working to introduce electric carriages. It expects the change could be in place by summer 2027.
