Mallorca: 400 ideas reshape environmental education

Nearly 400 people are helping redraw the Balearic Islands’ environmental education strategy, after submitting ideas online and at specialist meetings. On Wednesday, 2 September, the Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment said it would now set the work priorities for the updated plan. The existing strategy was written more than 20 years ago.

The aim is a new roadmap that reflects today’s environmental, social and educational reality, according to the ministry.

Ideas from the public and specialists

A total of 265 people used the citizen participation portal’s questionnaire. Another 119 took part through nine sector meetings.

Those meetings brought together representatives from public bodies, schools and universities, environmental groups, the socioeconomic sector, members of the public and environmental education professionals.

Schools and public bodies in focus

Participants broadly agreed that environmental education should be strengthened as a joined-up, lasting public policy. Their proposals call for it to be more firmly built into every stage of education.

They also want closer coordination between administrations, schools, organisations and other groups, alongside a more professional sector and stronger networks.

Agriculture Minister Joan Simonet said environmental education must do more than raise awareness. It should help involve society in protecting the environment and using natural resources responsibly.
