Esporles honours five neighbours shot dead in 1939

Esporles marks the 87th anniversary of five neighbours being executed during Franco-era repression in August 1939. On Wednesday, 26 August, the town council paid tribute to the victims, their families and those who have worked to recover and pass on their history. The five names now stand on the memorial wall at Palma cemetery.

Historical archive records say 32 people from Esporles were arrested and brought before a military court, accused of joining or helping a rebellion. Twenty-seven received 30-year prison sentences. The other five were executed by the Falange.

They were Joan Bosch Mas, known as Manxador; Miquel Capplonch Moranta; Bartomeu Comas Ferrà, known as Elionor; Pau Fernández Ferrà, known as Gardella; and Gabriel Calafell Serra, known as Piu. The council said the commemoration is part of preserving Esporles's democratic memory and making sure the victims' experiences are known.
