Mallorca eviction row over 65-year-old woman’s case

A 65-year-old woman’s eviction claim sparks a housing row in Palma, Mallorca, on 13 October 2026. Balearic housing minister José Luis Mateo accuses Socialist MP Omar Lamin of using Pilar López for electoral gain after she went to the Parliament of the Balearic Islands the previous Tuesday to seek help with her housing. López says a fund evicted her.

Minister and MP clash over López’s case

Lamin rejects the accusation. He says he helped López because she came to parliament asking for a solution, and calls for immediate action on evictions. People need help now, he says, not in five years.

Mateo blames the Balearic Islands’ housing crisis on a lack of action during the previous two legislative terms. He says the Balearic government deeply regrets evictions, but argues that they take place under Spanish government laws.

Menorca MP asks what homes should cost

The debate also turns to Menorca. Joana Gomila, an MP for Més per Menorca, asks Mateo what he means by affordable housing. She says flat prices on the island are beyond many people’s budgets.

Mateo gives no price despite her request. He says his department is working on homes for residents at below-market prices, and criticises a lack of Spanish government investment on Menorca. Gomila maintains that there is no affordable housing on the island.
