Palma, Mallorca: the CCOO union holds a minute’s silence outside its headquarters on Friday, 9 October, for Maricarmen, an elderly woman evicted in Madrid who has recently died. The union uses the tribute to call for the right to decent housing.

In a statement, CCOO says her death has brought deep sadness and drawn attention to the harm caused by insecure housing. It says workers struggle to find and keep homes when wages cannot keep up with rising rents and living costs. Housing, it argues, must not be treated simply as something to buy and sell for profit.

CCOO wants public policies that make decent homes affordable and give more protection to people at risk of eviction. It also calls for people to join the general strike planned for 11 November, demanding decent wages, affordable housing and prices that do not erode purchasing power.
