Mallorca farmers pitch local produce to hotels

Mallorca’s farmers and food producers get five chances to pitch to hotels, restaurants and shops: the first meeting takes place in Andratx, Mallorca, on Tuesday 20 October. The Balearic Islands Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment is running the Conecta Local programme as farming groups warn that sales of local produce are falling.

At each morning meeting, producers will show potential buyers what they offer, hear what businesses need and discuss possible supply deals. A follow-up session will give them time to build on those introductions. The aim is to find new customers, not just promote local food.

Balearic tourism rules already require tourist establishments to use a minimum share of food produced in the islands, according to the ministry. Joan Llabrés, its director-general for Food Quality and Local Produce, says buyers also need a way to find producers and arrange supplies.

The next meetings are in Muro, Mallorca, on 22 October; Cala Millor, Mallorca, on 26 October; Ariany, Mallorca, on 29 October; and Campos, Mallorca, on 12 November. All take place in the morning. Registration for buyer businesses closed on 13 October, and the participating producers have been selected.
