Manacor fire: police arrest two after pistol threats

Smoke and flames rose from a home on the outskirts of Manacor, Mallorca, after two men living there fled alleged death threats from a group of about ten young people. Spain’s National Police have arrested two men over the suspected arson, with one also accused of threatening the residents with a pistol. The incident happened early on Tuesday, police said.

The two residents told officers that the group had arrived demanding money over an unpaid debt. They said one of the alleged attackers was carrying a pistol. Fearing an attack, the men hid before running from the house and into scrubland.

Four points where fire was started

When officers returned to the property with the victims, they saw smoke and flames coming from inside. Firefighters and Local Police were already working to put out the blaze.

One victim then received a phone call from an alleged attacker, who demanded that he go to a point in the town to settle the debt, police said. The caller continued to make death threats.

Investigators found four places where the fire had been started. Two were at the property’s only exits.

Inquiry remains open

Police carried out searches and checks at the entrances and exits to Manacor before finding and arresting two suspects. One was also detained over the alleged threats.

Officers from the criminal investigation unit at Manacor police station and forensic police are examining the case. One detainee is also accused of damaging security equipment at the station and attacking officers. Police say the investigation is still open and further arrests have not been ruled out.
