Mallorca fire flares up: four leave Santa Margalida

Four people have left homes near a fire in Santa Margalida, Mallorca, after smoke drifted towards the properties. The blaze, which began at 2.25am on Saturday 5 September in abandoned dairy buildings, flared up again at about 4pm after being brought under control in the morning.

Mallorca Fire Service and the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat) are tackling the agricultural fire. Fire crews from Inca and Sóller had contained it earlier, and Mallorca Fire Service withdrew at 1pm.

When the flames returned, crews from Inca and Calvià went back to the scene with the helicopter La Milana. Four Ibanat aircraft, 18 forest firefighters and two environmental agents are also involved.

Much of Mallorca and Menorca is at the highest wildfire-danger level on Saturday. Burning is banned in forest areas.
