Formentera keeps child guardianship despite €10m aid

Formentera must keep legal responsibility for minors after finding it cannot hand the role back to the Balearic Government. The Consell de Formentera said on 1 September that legal consultations had blocked the move. The Balearic Government has approved an extra ten million euros to reinforce the island’s care resources.

The island council had explored returning responsibility for guardianship of minors, but says limits in the Statute of Autonomy make that impossible. It says the priority is now to ensure Formentera has enough resources to provide the social service properly, after an exceptional rise in the resources needed.

The Consell welcomed the extra funding, saying it should strengthen available services and provide a more stable response to needs linked to the responsibility. But it stressed that the money does not settle the wider problem.

It will now press for answers through legal, institutional and political channels. The Consell says support from the Balearic Government cannot replace the responsibility of the Spanish Government in what it describes as a migration issue with national and European dimensions.
