Eight Formentera shops earn Balearic heritage seal

Eight long-standing shops on Formentera have received the Emblemàtics Balears seal, a scheme recognising local businesses tied to a town’s history and identity. Balearic regional government representatives and the Consell Insular de Formentera presented the plaques at each business on 28 August. Silvia Delgado, manager of the Balearic Regional Development Agency, ADRBalears, and island councillor Artal Mayans made the visits.

The eight businesses are Can Forn, Forn Can Jeroni, Forn Can Manolo, Forn Sant Ferran, Llibreria Tur Ferrer, Macramé, sa Farinera and Teixits J. Marí Serra.

Behind the plaques are decades of work, family handovers and trades kept alive as Formentera changed, the Balearic government said. The businesses have adapted while keeping their link to the places where they began, and many customers are still welcomed by name.

Emblemàtics Balears is run by ADRBalears with local authorities. It highlights and seeks to protect neighbourhood businesses with a long history, deep local roots or preserved material and intangible heritage.

There are now 406 businesses carrying the seal across 34 Balearic municipalities. Their histories, photographs, locations and contact details are listed on the Emblemàtics Balears website. The Formentera council and ADRBalears said the recognition also thanks those who have kept the shops open over the decades.
