Palma graffiti target tourist overcrowding
New graffiti criticising tourist overcrowding appeared on Monday, 24 August, in central Palma, Mallorca. The slogans were painted on Sant Gaietà Street, near the Balearic Government’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports.
Written in Catalan and English, the messages included “Tourism kills Mallorca” and “Your luxury, our misery”. Sant Gaietà Street runs parallel to the Born.
The ministry’s façade was targeted by similar graffiti on 14 August, when the words “Tourism kills” were painted there. That message was removed within hours.
Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Jaume Bauzá condemned the earlier incident, saying a complex debate was reduced to an easy slogan. Balearic Government President Marga Prohens also criticised the action, describing damage to a building in Palma’s old town as an attack on heritage rather than an appropriate way to express discontent.
