Sexual harassment claims fuel Palma camp eviction row

Palma, Mallorca: Sexual harassment allegations at a housing protest camp have sparked a row over calls to clear it. On 6 October, campaign group Flama and the camp accused Mayor Jaime Martínez of using the allegations to justify an eviction. The dispute follows a Palma City Council statement saying Martínez had asked the Government Delegation to act immediately at the camp after Flama made the allegations public.

Flama and the camp say speaking out about sexist behaviour does not mean their protest for decent housing should end. They say they have listened to those affected, removed people who made others feel unsafe and introduced measures for prevention and support.

The camp also accuses the council of repeatedly calling for its eviction instead of listening to demands for action on the housing crisis. It says the protest will continue.
