Palma health app lacks Catalan access to records

A Balearic health app does not allow people to manage their health data in Catalan, the cultural organisation Obra Cultural Balear (OCB) said in Palma on Thursday, 27 August. The group says key parts of Espai Salut, the Balearic public health system’s platform, appear only in Spanish. It is demanding an urgent fix from the Balearic Government.

OCB said Spanish is also the app’s default language. It wants Espai Salut to work fully in Catalan and to open in that language, while still allowing users to choose other languages.

The organisation said a substantial part of the platform’s content is available exclusively in Spanish. It warned that this could breach several language rules in force across the islands.

OCB called the problem particularly serious in public health. It said the right to use a co-official language when dealing with the administration must apply beyond face-to-face and telephone services, including apps and other digital tools.

The group said it was unacceptable for people entitled to care in Catalan to find their health records, medical reports or medication information available only in Spanish.
