Mallorca hospitals secure health student placements
Health students at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) have their clinical placement places secured under a four-year agreement signed in Palma on 2 September. The deal also lets IBSalut healthcare staff supervise students during their normal working hours.
The Education and Universities department, IBSalut and the UIB signed the agreement to bring public health services into university teaching and research. It covers undergraduate and postgraduate health-science courses.
Hospitals and health centres join the training network
IBSalut will make its services, consultations and facilities available for UIB study programmes and clinical placements. The plan is intended to strengthen students’ clinical training and improve coordination on health research between the university, hospitals, primary care and the Balearic Islands Health Research Institute Foundation.
The UIB’s partner network includes Son Espases and Son Llàtzer university hospitals, alongside Can Misses, Inca, Manacor and Mateu Orfila hospitals. Health centres will also be included where needed to cover the places offered on UIB courses.
Staff can teach during normal hours
The agreement puts measures from Decree Law 3/2026 into practice after the Consell de Govern approved it on 7 August. Alongside clinical tutors and associate professors, it sets rules for healthcare staff who help with teaching and for posts shared between the university and health service.
IBSalut staff can supervise placements, tutor students and take part in seminars, clinical sessions and assessments without a separate UIB contract. They will receive a teaching supplement matched to associate-professor pay scales.
For shared university and healthcare posts, professionals will have a single UIB payslip, while IBSalut transfers payment for their clinical duties to the university. The posts also carry a supplement aimed at building a stable teaching workforce, particularly for Medicine and Nursing degrees.
