Two heat deaths in Balearics linked to August temperatures

Two deaths in the Balearic Islands were associated with high temperatures in August, Spain's daily mortality monitoring system has estimated. Across Spain, the system, known as MoMo, put the number at 2,149. The figures were released on 1 September.

The national total was 35 lower than in August 2025, when MoMo estimated 2,184 deaths. It was still the second-highest August figure since the monitoring system began in 2015.

Most of those counted were older people. MoMo estimated that 2,064 were over 65, including 1,285 aged over 85. The figures included 1,283 women and 866 men.

Catalonia had the highest estimated number of heat-linked deaths, with 1,164. The Valencian Community followed with 227 and Andalusia with 138. The Balearic Islands recorded two.

Since the Plan Calor 2026 was activated, MoMo has estimated 5,234 deaths linked to high temperatures. That total includes 123 in May, 937 in June, 2,025 in July and 2,149 in August.
