Mallorca heat brings very high to extreme fire risk
Mallorca and the rest of the Balearics face unusually hot days until at least Tuesday, with very high to extreme wildfire danger and very warm nights forecast. On Thursday, 3 September, the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, warned that the risk is highest around midday, especially for outdoor activities and vulnerable people. The heat could last until Tuesday or Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to ease more widely.
Warm, dry and dusty air over the islands
Aemet links the heat to a DANA weather system southwest of the Iberian Peninsula and high pressure over North Africa and the Alborán Sea. Together they are drawing warm, dry air carrying suspended dust across much of the peninsula and the Balearics.
Strong sunshine and sinking air are adding to the heat. Aemet does not currently expect the episode to trigger a special heatwave warning, but says there is high uncertainty over its strength, reach and duration.
Storms are possible from Saturday
Storms could accompany the hot spell from Saturday, Aemet said. It remains unclear how intense they may be or which areas they could affect because the position of the DANA is uncertain.
The broader outlook points to a more general fall in temperatures from Tuesday or Wednesday, bringing values that are milder for the time of year.
