Mallorca’s ARCA warns Spain is losing its heritage

Mallorca, Spain: valued buildings are going without the care they need, and heritage is being lost across the country, warns the Association for the Revitalisation of Historic Centres (ARCA). On Saturday, the Mallorca heritage group takes its concerns to a meeting in Teruel, Spain. Eight experts from across the country will discuss how to protect historic sites and works of art.

ARCA is helping to organise the meeting. Its president, Pere Ollers Vives, will speak about heritage law, drawing on 35 court rulings he has examined. Prosecutors who deal with planning and environmental cases across Spain have also been invited because of their role in enforcing protection laws.

The group says too little is spent maintaining valuable buildings. It wants them recorded and effectively protected, along with landscapes shaped by farming and industry. ARCA says every community faces heritage losses; in Teruel, the experts will examine some of the causes and discuss possible solutions.
