Mallorca: Palma horse carriage protest demands electric swap

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Horse-drawn carriages in Palma, Mallorca, face a protest on Saturday at 18.00: campaigners want electric replacements and a public timetable for the switch. Satya Animal, Progreso en Verde and Arde are organising the march. It will start at Plaça de la Porta de Santa Catalina, pass through Feixina, Passeig de Sagrera and Avinguda d’Antoni Maura, and end at Plaça de la Reina.

The groups want Palma City Council to set deadlines for the change and retire the horses from carriage work with decent conditions. They say physical effort, traffic, asphalt and weather put the animals at constant risk. They also say effective restrictions are lacking and question the checks and inspections.

The march follows two protests planned for Friday: one at 10.00 at the University of the Balearic Islands against animal testing and vivisection, and another at 18.00 outside Louis Vuitton against the use of animal fur in fashion. On Sunday at 10.00, a demonstration outside Marineland will oppose keeping marine animals in captivity.
