Palma housing camp wants vote to spur general strike push

Mallorca’s housing crisis does not pause for an election: campaigners at a housing camp in Palma, Mallorca, say on Monday, 5 October, that the announced vote must increase pressure for a general strike. They point to people who cannot afford their rent, others who have to leave their neighbourhoods and young people who cannot imagine a future on the island.

The election changes the political picture, the campaigners say, but not the position of people struggling with housing. They do not want housing to become just another campaign promise in the coming months. They want firm commitments and measures that change people’s living conditions.

The campaigners say their protest serves no party. They say the housing emergency has gone too long without an adequate response, and they will keep holding those responsible to account whoever governs next.
