Mallorca women make 2,731 violence support calls

Women made 2,731 calls to IBDona’s 24-hour support service across the Balearic Islands in the first half of 2026. Of them, 91.8% concerned violence against women. IBDona director Cati Salom presented the figures on Thursday in Palma, Mallorca.

Most callers had experienced gender violence, followed by women reporting sexual violence or other forms of violence. February recorded the highest monthly total, with 508 calls. Spanish women aged 31 to 40 were the largest group helped by the service.

Summer brings a greater risk

Salom said gender violence rises during the summer months. She linked this to couples spending more time together, greater isolation of women and more frequent contact between separated parents who have children together.

She described the figures as worrying, saying that even one woman needing help was cause for concern.

Support beyond the first call

IBDona arranged 311 accompaniments for women. Of these, 294 concerned gender violence, five sexual violence and nine other forms of violence against women. The service accompanied 86 women, with some needing help more than once.

The organisation said more women are reaching the service because it has promoted the free phone line more widely in Spanish, Mallorcan and other languages. A project using representatives on local committees covers 85% of municipalities across the islands.

Relatives who call can receive advice. Women contacting the service are referred to in-person, specialised support, and the 24-hour team follows up cases after the initial call.
