Mallorca violence helpline: 2,731 calls by June

IBDona’s 24-hour violence helpline handled 2,731 calls from women in the Balearics during the first six months of 2026. Of those calls, 91.8% concerned violence against women. Director Cati Salom presented the figures in Palma, Mallorca, on 3 September 2026.

The total was 36% higher than in the same period last year. Salom called the figures worrying, while saying the service was reaching more women.

Some 2,507 calls, up 38%, related to gender-based violence, the term used for violence against women. A further 124 concerned sexual violence and 100 involved other forms of violence against women.

IBDona also arranged 311 accompaniments for women, including 294 linked to gender-based violence. The service supported 86 women in all, with some needing help more than once.

Salom said gender-based violence rises during the summer months. She linked this to couples spending more time together, greater isolation for women and more frequent contact between separated parents who share children.

The organisation attributes part of the rise in calls to wider publicity for its free service in Spanish, Mallorcan and other languages. It has strengthened overnight availability from 23.00 to 08.00 on Mallorca and from 22.00 to 08.00 on the other islands, while a separate scheme reaches 85% of municipalities across the Balearics.

Relatives who call can receive advice, while women who contact the service are referred to in-person support. The 24-hour line follows up cases, and women or professionals assisting them can reach the accompaniment service free on 900.178.989.
