Youth, cultural, environmental and citizens’ groups will protest against the expansion of Ibiza Airport on 20 September. The demonstration starts at 18.00 in s’Alamera, on Passeig Vara de Rey in Eivissa, Ibiza. The Associació de Joves d’Eivissa is among the groups calling for the action.

The youth association opposes more flights and long-haul routes, and says the plans fail to respect the natural area of ses Salines. It also says the expansion will bring no benefit to people on the Pitiusas islands.

Aena announced the airport project this year. The airport operator plans to spend more than 200 million euros modernising and adapting the infrastructure.

Organisers challenge assurances from Aena and public authorities that annual passenger numbers will not rise. The association says people living on the island have seen traveller numbers increase year after year.

The groups are urging people not to stay silent over what they describe as one-sided decisions that serve those in power and harm life and society in Eivissa.
