In Eivissa, Ibiza, People’s Party councillor Ana Ferrer Prohías has submitted her resignation after her husband was arrested in an operation against an alleged cocaine-smuggling organisation. Her party confirmed the resignation on Sunday night.

The operation broke up a group suspected of bringing cocaine into Europe and using luxury property firms to launder money through villas in Eivissa, Marbella and Madrid.

Ferrer told Eivissa’s mayor, Rafa Triguero, last week that she wanted to give up her council seat for personal and family reasons. According to the People’s Party, she told him first verbally and then in writing. Triguero advised her to formalise the resignation, which will take effect once the required procedure is complete.

The Socialist Party in Eivissa had called for Ferrer to resign and for a political and institutional response from the mayor. It said the council must set an example of transparency and political responsibility.
