Ibiza’s 11 November general strike takes shape: a committee in Eivissa, on the island of Ibiza, is planning joint action over rents and evictions. At its first meeting on Friday, the committee agreed a timetable and how the groups involved will work together. The tenants’ union Sindicat de Llogateres d’Eivissa i Formentera called the meeting with UGT, CCOO, STEI and Col·lectiva Les Invisibles.

Rent cuts and more public homes

The groups want steep rent cuts, secure housing and an end to evictions. They also want taxes that penalise property speculation and the accumulation of homes.

Their plan for more public housing includes bringing empty homes into use, recovering protected homes that have ended up on the open market and building new ones. They also want to ban the use of homes for tourism.

More groups join the strike plans

The committee condemns harassment and violence against people campaigning for housing rights. It opposes police violence and wants to ban private eviction firms that use intimidation or coercion, including paramilitary-style methods. It also calls for action against racial discrimination in housing.

Several more associations and social groups have joined, and the committee expects others to follow. It will coordinate those taking part and prepare the actions planned for 11 November. From Eivissa and Formentera, it is urging people to learn about the demands and take part in the strike.
