Ibiza to beatify 20 priests murdered in Civil War
Twenty priests murdered during the Civil War: parish choirs in Eivissa, on the island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, begin events leading to their beatification on Saturday, 10 October. They will sing a new hymn together at Eivissa Cathedral at 20.00. The Diocese of Eivissa has organised the programme.
A hymn, film and exhibition
Musician and teacher Jordi Martí composed the hymn. After its premiere, the cathedral will show a documentary about the priests’ lives and deaths. An exhibition called ‘In Memoriam. Ad Honorem’ will then open at the Pabordía, with pictures and objects connected to their lives.
A Balearic first on 17 October
On Friday, 16 October, Bishop Vicent Ribas will lead prayers for the dead at the places where the priests were killed. Their beatification follows at Eivissa Cathedral at 11.00 on Saturday, 17 October — the first ceremony of its kind in the Balearic Islands. Cardinal Marcello Semeraro will lead it as Pope Leo XIV’s representative.
A thanksgiving Mass follows at the cathedral at 11.00 on Sunday, 18 October. Every parish will hold thanksgiving Masses on 24 and 25 October, then mark the first liturgical feast of the newly beatified priests on Friday, 6 November.
