Mallorca tourism: Iceland studies skills and waste
Mallorca, Spain, is showing an Icelandic delegation how it trains tourism workers and manages waste on 16 October. The group, which includes Iceland’s ambassador to Spain, Kristján Andri Stefánsson, is on a two-day visit to learn about the island’s approach to tourism. The Tourism Department of Mallorca’s island council organised the trip, the council says.
The visit began on Thursday at the Hotel Riu Playa Park in Playa de Palma, Mallorca. There, the delegation heard about projects involving sustainability, reusing resources and making use of local resources.
Training and tourism plans
In working sessions, representatives from tourism, business and the island council discussed digital innovation, tourism management, and the links between shopping, local products and a visitor’s experience.
At the Juníper Serra vocational training centre, the group looked at the role of training and qualifications in tourism. Mallorca’s tourism councillor, Guillem Ginard, said Mallorca and Iceland both want to broaden what they offer visitors and place greater value on culture, traditions and heritage. He said that approach matters to residents as well as visitors.
Waste facilities and Palma’s old town
The delegation also visited Tirme’s facilities to see Mallorca’s waste-management system and efforts to reuse resources. The day’s programme included a walk through the historic centre of Palma, Mallorca, and a visit to the Museum of Mallorca.
Island council president Llorenç Galmés said Mallorca’s longer experience as a tourist destination could be useful to other places as they develop their own approach.
