Mallorca traders demand action on illegal street selling

Dozens of people tried to obstruct a Local Police operation against illegal street selling in Playa de Palma, Mallorca, through pressure or confrontation, traders’ group Pimeco said on 28 August. Pimeco has given its full backing to Palma City Council and the Local Police after what it called serious incidents. The group said those breaking the rules must not win a stand-off with the authorities.

Pimeco said it was not seeking to criminalise any group, but added that vulnerability must not mean impunity. It also praised the officers involved in the operation.

More police and action on supply networks

The association said Palma City Council was already making efforts to tackle illegal street selling, but demanded that the pressure be maintained and stepped up. It wants a stronger police presence and closer work with the National Police and the Government Delegation.

Pimeco also called for action against the networks that supply, store and distribute illegal goods. It said repeat offenders should face effective consequences.

Call to change the law

The traders’ body says the current tools are too often insufficient against a problem it describes as increasingly organised and repetitive. It wants the law reviewed and changed to give public authorities and security forces more effective means to act.

Pimeco warned that backing down would send the worst possible message and said respect for authority and the law could not be called into question.
