Ibiza’s island council now counts more than 1,000 illegal transport penalty cases in a year for the first time. Inspectors filed six new complaints last week against unlicensed taxis carrying passengers at Ibiza Airport on the island of Ibiza. The council announced the figures on 17 October.

The airport checks are part of a special operation to find and stop illegal transport services. During the tourist season, inspectors covered up to 14 hours a day at the airport, every day of the week.

The council’s Transport Department also plans to open 40 penalty cases against people offering hire cars online without authorisation. Each offence carries a €4,000 fine. The council will scrap 35 seized vehicles, in addition to others it has already taken off the road.
