ING 10% card offer cut from 18 days to four

ING has cut a promised 10% credit-card cashback offer from 18 days to just four, according to consumer group Facua. The group reported the bank to Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and 2030 Agenda in Madrid on 2 September. It says customers who received the offer could have spent more than planned.

The bank emailed customers on 10 August, saying it would refund 10% on credit-card purchases of €100 or more, up to €60. It gave the example of a €50 refund on €500 spent, with the money due on 5 September. The offer was initially meant to run until 28 August.

Days later, ING said an “operational incident” in sending the first message meant the promotion had not been active. Facua warned it would file a complaint if the bank did not honour the deal.

On 31 August, ING said it would apply the offer after all, but only until 14 August rather than 28 August. That left customers with a four-day promotion instead of the 18 days first announced.

Facua says ING must keep the terms set out in its 10 August email and cannot later change them to customers’ disadvantage. It cites Article 61 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/2007, which says the terms of offers and advertising can be enforced even when they are not written into a contract.

The group has called for sanction proceedings against ING and urged customers who received the promotion to demand that the bank fulfils it.
