Italy border checks affect Mallorca travellers
Thirty-two passengers arriving from Italy underwent identity checks in the Balearic Islands between Wednesday and 1pm on Thursday 20 August. At Palma de Mallorca Airport, the Italy border checks involved 10 travellers on two flights, according to figures from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior.
The Spanish Government introduced the airport checks after Italy suspended the Schengen arrangements following the migration crisis in Ceuta.
Eivissa records the highest number
Eivissa Airport processed 14 passengers from three flights, the largest total in the islands. Menorca recorded eight third-country nationals across seven checked flights.
Checks extend across Spain
Across Spain, officers requested documents from 6,888 arriving passengers on 622 flights, with 1,014 personnel involved in the operation.
The temporary controls apply at airports and ports with direct links between Spain and Italy. They began on Saturday 8 August and are due to remain in force until 7 September.
