Mallorca: 15 travellers face checks on Italy flights
Fifteen third-country travellers arriving on two flights from Italy have had to show documents at Mallorca Airport since Sunday. The checks are part of Spain’s response to Italy’s suspension of the Schengen free-movement agreement. By 13:00 on Monday, 31 August, Spain had asked 12,885 arriving travellers for identification documents.
Mallorca recorded the highest number of such checks in the Balearics. Ibiza recorded three travellers on one flight, while Menorca recorded no third-country travellers on the three flights arriving there.
Since Sunday, 548 passengers have gone through the procedure across Spain. Madrid-Barajas accounted for 294 of them on eight flights, while Barcelona recorded 103 travellers on six flights.
Spain brought in the airport border checks on 8 August for an initial month after Italy suspended Schengen free movement following the migration crisis in Ceuta on 30 July. Italy extended its suspension on Monday for a further 15 days, so the Spanish checks will continue for the same period.
The Ministry of the Interior said 1,885 officers had checked 1,111 flights by Monday lunchtime.
