Palma to display five Jewish treasures for four years

Five Jewish religious objects are set to go on display at Palma’s Centre Maimó Ben Faraig under a four-year loan from the Jewish Community of the Balearic Islands. The agreement was signed at Can Oms on Friday, 28 August, by the community’s vice-president Josep Maria Molina and Palma’s Culture Councillor Javier Bonet. The municipal centre is due to resume its work soon, focusing on the Jewish community’s historical and cultural heritage.

The collection includes a Sefer Torá, a scroll containing the five books of Moses; a Shofar, a wind instrument; a Siudr prayer book; a Hanukkiah, a nine-branched candelabrum; and a Yad reading pointer.

Palma City Council said the objects carry artistic and historical value as part of Jewish heritage in Palma and across the Balearic Islands. The loan can be extended for a further four years.

The signing comes ahead of the European Day of Jewish Culture on 6 September.
