Mallorca: Palma bridge bars buses, shuttle every 45 minutes

On Mallorca, buses and heavy vehicles remain barred from a bridge on Joan Saridakis street in Palma, while a shuttle runs every 45 minutes, the Socialist Party (PSIB) says. On Wednesday, 7 October, the party called on the Consell de Mallorca island council and Palma City Council to repair the bridge and improve the bus service. Pieces of the bridge have broken away since 2024, prompting the traffic ban.

A repair plan within a month

The restriction makes travel between two neighbourhoods and the rest of Palma harder, according to PSIB island councillor Joan Ferrer. He wants the bridge repaired as soon as possible and residents told when buses will be able to return.

Socialist groups plan to bring motions to the next meetings of the island council and city council. They want a technical solution published within a month, along with a cost estimate and a timetable covering the steps needed to complete the work.

Calls for a more frequent shuttle

Francesc Dalmau, the party’s spokesman on Palma City Council, says the Municipal Transport Company shuttle has returned to a 45-minute interval. The Socialists want it to run at least every 30 minutes and want its route reviewed to cut changes of bus and walking distances.

They also want the island council to review how it inspects and maintains bridges, particularly older structures and those over major roads.
