Mallorca left seeks joint bid for Spain’s election
Four left-wing parties could share one ticket across the Balearic Islands in Spain’s 29 November general election: in Palma, Mallorca, Esquerra Unida de Baleares is asking Ara Més, Podemos and Sumar to open talks. It made the proposal on 6 October 2026, arguing that a united candidacy would give the islands more clout over policies decided in Madrid.
A wider alliance of left-wing parties is also being discussed across Spain. But Esquerra Unida spokesman Óscar Rodríguez says the Balearic parties cannot wait for Madrid. They need to talk locally and see whether they can reach an agreement.
The party wants stronger public services, housing rights and a greater share of wealth for workers. It points to free public transport during 2026 as a gain, but says more needs to be done on housing and funding for services.
It also opposes airport expansion in Palma, Mallorca, and Eivissa, Ibiza, and is pressing for a control tower at Menorca’s airport. For Rodríguez, those disputes show why the islands need a voice in Madrid that can negotiate for them.
