Mallorca courts in line for judges as Balearics plans 13

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Palma, Mallorca, is in line to share ten new judge posts with Eivissa and Maó: Spain’s government fast-tracks plans for 13 posts across the Balearics on Tuesday, 13 October. Four prosecutor posts are proposed too, but Tuesday’s decision has not created any of them. The Council of Ministers approved urgent processing for two decrees that would allow the posts, according to the Spanish government’s delegation in the Balearics.

Where the judge posts could go

Ten posts are planned for the courts of first instance in Palma, Eivissa and Maó. Two would go to the Balearic Islands Provincial Court. The remaining post could be assigned to the Balearic Islands High Court to meet changing needs.

The government delegation says the plans would increase judge numbers by 8% and prosecutor numbers by 5.1%. It says 29 judge posts were created in the Balearics between 2025 and 2026, a rise of 19.9%.

Part of a wider plan for Spain

Across Spain, the two decrees would allow 500 new judge posts and 200 prosecutor posts with a view to 2027. They are separate from another 700 posts announced by justice minister Félix Bolaños in July, which are due to be active before 31 December 2026.
