Nick Kyrgios suspended after positive cocaine test in Mallorca
Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after a positive cocaine test at the Mallorca tournament in Mallorca, Spain. The International Tennis Integrity Agency said the Australian player’s ban took effect on 4 August 2026.
Kyrgios provided the sample on 22 June during the tournament. A laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed the presence of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, on 17 July.
Mandatory provisional ban
Cocaine is classified as both a stimulant and a substance of abuse on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list, and is banned in competition under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme. The nature of the substance makes a provisional suspension mandatory.
Kyrgios may appeal the decision, although the International Tennis Integrity Agency said he had not done so. While suspended, he cannot compete, train or attend events organised or authorised by World Tennis, the Women’s Tennis Association, the Association of Tennis Professionals, Grand Slam tournaments or national federations.
Kyrgios accepts responsibility
In a social-media statement issued before the agency’s announcement, Kyrgios said he had made a serious mistake and accepted full responsibility for the positive test. He apologised to his supporters, family, sponsors and those close to him.
The player said injuries in recent years had taken a heavy physical and mental toll as he faced the prospect of the end of his career. He said he would step away from social media and public life for 28 days while focusing on recovery.
