La Caixa launches 600 activities for older people in Balearic Islands
The la Caixa Foundation has organised more than 600 activities for older people across the Balearic Islands, Spain, reaching nearly 14,000 participants at 22 centres during the current programme year. The initiative was announced in Palma, Mallorca, on 25 August 2026.
The programme covers physical health, digital skills and personal development, and is intended to support older residents’ participation in community life while responding to their changing needs.
Health, digital skills and tackling ageism
Activities are divided into five areas: maintaining physical health and preventing frailty, personal development, digital skills, social and community participation, and creativity and reflection. The foundation said the approach is designed to support both physical and emotional wellbeing.
A new workshop on identifying and preventing ageism gives participants tools to respond to age-based discrimination. It also includes awareness-raising work through volunteering.
David Velasco, director of the la Caixa Foundation’s programme for older people, said the courses also aim to reduce isolation. The centres provide places for people to form connections, develop abilities and share experiences.
Participation across Spain
Across Spain, 550,000 older people have taken part in nearly 20,000 activities this programme year, delivered through 634 foundation-run or publicly partnered centres.
More than 11,000 people have joined the programme’s virtual workshops since they began, with over 94 per cent of surveyed participants saying they would recommend them. The programme also runs Aula abierta short courses for older volunteers who provide digital support at the centres.
