Balearic labour market: Adecco calls for inclusion
Fundación Adecco has called for barriers and discrimination in the Balearic labour market to be removed, saying older workers and people with disabilities must be better included as the population ages. The organisation made the appeal in Palma, Mallorca, on 19 August 2026.
Projections by the National Statistics Institute show that the Balearic Islands’ working-age population is expected to rise by 4.7% to 963,939 between 2030 and 2040. Over the same period, the number of residents aged over 64 is forecast to increase by 31.6% to 321,796 — seven times the rate of growth.
Fundación Adecco said its Observatory on Vulnerability and Employment had examined the trend and concluded that every available measure would be needed to ease recruitment shortages, fill vacancies and support the islands’ long-term economic and social prospects.
It said inclusion would be a key part of that response, with employers and institutions needing to draw on the skills and experience of senior professionals, people with disabilities and others facing obstacles to work. The foundation added that expanding the workforce would require better employability and genuine opportunities for excluded groups.
Francisco Mesonero, the foundation’s director general, said people with disabilities, women at risk of exclusion and others who struggle to access employment should not be left behind while companies face a growing shortage of professionals.
