Mallorca: left-wing groups unite for 29 November vote

On Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, three left-wing groups are joining forces for Spain’s 29 November general election. They want decent housing and stronger public services at the heart of their campaign. Esquerra Unida de Balears (EUIB), Ara Més and Movimiento Sumar will stand together as Frente Amplio, EUIB said in Palma on 16 October.

The alliance is calling for free public transport, universal healthcare and good public education. It also wants an economy less dependent on tourism, with decent jobs and more variety. Its other priorities include protecting natural spaces, landscapes, biodiversity and water resources, and strengthening the use of Catalan, the Balearic Islands’ own language.

EUIB’s Mallorca coordinator, Ana Ordóñez, says joining forces is key to defending people’s rights and tackling the problems they face. EUIB says its work with other groups will continue beyond the election. It wants Frente Amplio to give the islands a stronger voice in Spain’s Congress of Deputies.
