Calvià lifeguards announce strike over service and working conditions
Lifeguards in Calvià, Mallorca, have called a strike for Sunday, 23 August, accusing Calvià Town Hall of failing to address demands concerning beach safety provision and employment conditions.
The Union of Lifeguards of Calvià said the action followed unsuccessful efforts to negotiate improvements. It accused mayor Juan Antonio Amengual of lacking the political will to reach an agreement and criticised his advisers.
Concerns over beach safety service
The union said the condition of some lifeguard towers was preventing staff from carrying out their work normally. It also said coverage was insufficient both across the year and during individual working days.
It warned that the situation could affect the health of lifeguards and the safety of the thousands of people who use Calvià’s beaches each day. The workers described the strike as a drastic step after negotiations had failed to produce an agreement.
Accessibility, communications and pay complaints
The union also said bathing access for people with reduced mobility was available at only four of the municipality’s eleven beaches, which it considered inadequate.
Lifeguards further reported communications failures that force them to activate emergency procedures using their personal mobile phones. They also raised concerns about recurring errors in the payment of their wages.
