Calvià lifeguard strike planned for busy Sunday
Calvià Council in Mallorca has criticised a lifeguard strike called for Sunday by the Unión de Socorristas de Calvià. In a statement issued on 18 August, the council said the planned walkout coincides with a weekend when its beaches are expected to be particularly busy.
The council said the union does not hold legal representative authority for the other lifeguards.
Safety measures under review
Council representatives met several weeks ago with four lifeguards working on Calvià’s beaches this summer, according to the authority. They said they would assess and potentially introduce measures proposed in a workplace-risk report prepared by the company contracted to run the service.
Most of the proposals were recommendations concerning stronger safety arrangements and better working conditions. Possible upgrades included improvements to lookout towers, observation chairs and rescue posts, which the council said would require substantial spending.
Pay issues referred to contractor
Calvià Council said it would consider requests it regarded as reasonable and beneficial to the service and the wider public, but would not make decisions in response to threats of mobilisation.
It added that none of the four lifeguards at the meeting sat on the contracted company’s works council. Any changes to lifeguards’ pay conditions should be negotiated with that company rather than the local authority, the council said.
