Llucmajor rubbish collection criticised by local party

Llibertat Llucmajor has criticised the rubbish collection situation in Llucmajor, Mallorca, accusing mayor Xisca Lascolas of taking holiday leave without arranging extra cleaning resources. In a statement issued on 22 August, the local party said waste bags had been left for days outside homes and beside overflowing bins in Llucmajor, s'Arenal and the municipality’s urbanisations.

The group said the problem had changed little over the past month and described it as a public-health concern, citing bad smells and the presence of insects and rodents. It called on the municipal government to take immediate action.

Proposal for extra cleaning crews

Llibertat Llucmajor said it had again submitted an emergency proposal the previous Tuesday for five open-backed lorries or vans, each staffed by three workers.

Under the proposal, a 15-person team would travel daily through Llucmajor, s'Arenal and the urbanisations to remove bags and other waste left outside containers.

Call for a public response

Party spokesman Alexandro Gaffar urged the municipal government to hire the additional staff urgently and publish the measures it plans to take, the resources available and its timetable.

Councillor Miguel Pascual said residents needed rubbish to be collected rather than further assurances. Llibertat Llucmajor said its proposal had so far received no response from the governing team.
