Mallorca lunar eclipse: best viewing on 28 August
A partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, before dawn on 28 August. The event begins at about 04.30, with the strongest views expected from the western parts of the islands and a reddish Moon forecast around daybreak.
Salvador Sánchez, president of the Mallorca Foundation for Astronomy and Astronautics, said the Earth’s shadow will cover 93 per cent of the Moon, meaning the eclipse will not be total.
When and where to see the eclipse
The change is expected to be slight at the start, but the Moon may take on pink or red tones from about 05.30. The key viewing period is expected around 06.15, while the maximum phase is estimated at about 06.30, with the Moon roughly 15 degrees above the horizon.
On Mallorca, the Serra de Tramuntana is expected to offer particularly clear views. Visibility may be poorer in some settlements on the range’s eastern foothills, although the Moon should remain high enough for the eclipse to be seen elsewhere in the archipelago.
Viewing and photography advice
No specialist eye protection is required for a lunar eclipse. Sánchez said ordinary sunglasses would be sufficient only if the Moon appears too bright.
He also advised against attending informal viewing gatherings at high locations, as darkness can make the terrain hazardous. Mobile-phone photographers can use a tripod or prop the device on a sports shoe for support.
