Mallorca airport growth: MPs demand a plan rethink
Mallorca’s Palma airport, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, faces a challenge to planned growth: regional MPs vote on Tuesday, 6 October, to ask the Spanish government to remove planned growth at the islands’ airports from its 2027–2031 plan. The Balearic Parliament wants the government to revise the Airport Regulation Document, known as DORA III.
Every parliamentary group except Vox backs the request. It is the only part of a motion from Josep Castells, the Més per Menorca spokesperson, to win a majority.
Castells’s other proposals to curb mass tourism fail after opposition from the People’s Party (PP) and Vox. They include reducing the number of tourists and tourism workers, ending tourism promotion and changing the sustainable tourism tax.
MPs also reject calls to condemn the arrest of two activists accused of vandalising estate agencies in Santa Maria on Mallorca. They decline to condemn police action after a protest against tourist overcrowding in Palma on 26 July, or to ask the Spanish Interior Ministry to investigate what the motion calls “disproportionate” action by security forces against activists. The airport vote asks the government to change its plan; it does not change the plan itself.
